How to Choose a Personalised Cake Topper: Colours, Size and Wording

Gold lettering with a white backing on a personalised two-layer cake topper for Indrakumar’s 70th birthday

Choosing a personalised cake topper comes down to three things: what you want it to say, how it works with your cake colours, and whether the size suits your cake.

You don’t need to have every party detail decided. Start with the name or age, then use your cake design as a guide.

Choose wording that’s easy to read

A name and age, such as “Mia 5,” can make a birthday cake feel personal without overcrowding it.

Before ordering, write out exactly what you would like on your topper. Check the spelling, age and capital letters carefully, especially if someone else is placing the order for you.

Longer wording takes up more space. If you have a long name or a phrase in mind, contact us before ordering so we can discuss the layout.

Pick a front colour and an outline colour

Our personalised two-layer cake topper has raised wording over a backing layer. You choose the front and outline colours separately.

For a clear, easy-to-read design, choose colours with enough contrast. Two very similar pale shades can blend together, particularly against a light cake.

For example, the gold lettering and white backing on the 70th birthday topper pictured here show how an outline defines the wording while highlighting the layered design.

You can also take one colour from your invitations or decorations and pair it with a neutral. The topper doesn’t need to match every colour at the party. Check the product page for the colours currently available.

Check the cake size and decoration space

Our two-layer cake toppers are approximately 10–15 cm wide, depending on the name and design.

Before ordering, check the cake’s width and ask your cake maker how much space will be available on top. Flowers, candles and other decorations can affect where the topper will sit.

A useful way to picture the size is to cut a piece of paper to the approximate topper width and hold it above a cake board of the same size as your cake. This gives you a rough guide to the proportions.

If you need a particular width, discuss it with us before purchasing rather than assuming the standard design will fit.

Plan for the date you need it

Personalised toppers are made to order, so allow time for both production and delivery.

Check the current processing and shipping information before purchasing. If your celebration is approaching, contact us with the date you need the topper before placing your order so we can confirm whether it’s achievable.
